staff nameKaren is a graduate of Rugby (ND) High School and Jamestown (ND) College with a bachelor of science in nursing. She has done graduate work at Northern State College and the University of Minnesota.

Larson has worked in the field of maternal child health nursing, working at St. Alexius Medical Center as a labor and delivery nurse and childbirth educator, and as a clinical instructor at the University of Mary.

She became director of nursing at the Heartview Foundation in 1979, leaving that position in 1987 to become assistant director of the Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in the ND Department of Human Services. She served as director of the Division in 1995, after which she was assigned to merge that division with the Division of Mental Health Services. She served as director of the Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services from 1996 through June of 2004.

Throughout her career, Larson has lectured and provided training on a number of subjects in North Dakota and several other states. She served as a group leader in the development of a treatment improvement protocol manual on detoxification for the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment in the US Department of Health and Human Services. She served as the secretary of the National Prevention Network.

She is a active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Grand Matron for 2006-2007.
