After much hard work and planning the Health Information Technology Implementation for Health Center Controlled Networks (HCCN) grant was completed and submitted February 5, 2010. CHAD would like to thank everyone who worked so diligently to accomplish the writing of this grant. The submitted applications will be reviewed at the end of March.
Congratulations to Key Health Alliance, a Minnesota based partnership of Stratis Health, the Rural Health Resource Center, and The College of St. Scholastica! Key Health Alliance has been awarded a $19 million grant to serve as the new federally designated Regional Extension Assistance Centers for Health Information Technology (REACH) for Minnesota and North Dakota. The grant for South Dakota’s Regional Extension Center was submitted January 29, 2010 and these second-round award announcements are anticipated in late March.
CHAD will keep you up-to-date as the award announcements are made.
CHAD has been approached by Drs. Omar El-Gayer and Surendra Sarnikar of Dakota State University (DSU) to participate in a comparative effectiveness research project. This project would be a good fit for a collaborative effort between CHAD, DSU, and DSU’s Center for Health Information Technology (CAHIT). CHAD would like to invite members to participate in the pilot program.
Earlier this year, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) announced the availability of funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) for strategies for accelerating the adoption of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) comparative effectiveness research (CER) results by providers and patients (RFA-AE-10-001). DSU’s proposed project would disseminate existing CER products related to diabetes mellitus type 2 to clinicians and patients to improve use and penetration of the CER products in medically underserved areas. This would be accomplished by developing and implementing patient decision support systems (PDSS) and clinical decision support systems (CDSS) and incorporating these tools into clinical decision support settings.
CHAD members would benefit by providing a value-added service to patients, reducing health disparities, and improving overall patient care. DSU faculty will develop the ASPE product based on patient decision support systems and clinician decision support systems with collaboration from participating members’ providers along with University of South Dakota (USD) and Avera Endocrinologists and Diabetes experts. CHAD, CAHIT, and DSU faculty will provide the workflow and information technology implementation, project planning expertise, and training.

The Network Team should include clinical, IT, and other front line staff.
